Do you know the differences between Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and English? There are lots – and not always what you’d expect!

Auslan is a completely different language to English and has its own rules and structure. Same goes for ASL (American Sign Language) and BSL (British Sign Language) - three different sign languages that are used in English-speaking countries.

Sign languages are used by deaf people around the world, but they are also used by many people who are not deaf. The number of non-deaf people who use sign language varies by country.

Sign language is used by people for a variety of reasons, including:

  • By those who are deaf and hard of hearing to communicate with others
  • As an alternative to speaking, for people who are unable to speak physically, or as an option or therapy for those who have delayed speech, autism, or other neurodiversity
  • To communicate with people who have trouble with oral language due to a disability or condition
  • To communicate with family members and/or parents who are deaf
  • By care workers who work and communicate with deaf clients

Sign language is also taught in many schools and colleges as part of modern and foreign language classes, and is becoming more prevalent in primary/elementary school curricula.

SIGN LANGUAGE CATEGORIES

Sign languages are generally categorised into three groups:

Deaf sign languages, which are the preferred languages of Deaf communities around the world; these include village sign languages, shared with the hearing community, and Deaf-community sign languages

Auxiliary sign languages, which are not native languages but sign systems of varying complexity, used alongside spoken languages. Simple gestures are not included, as they do not constitute language.

Signed modes of spoken languages, also known as manually coded languages, which are bridges between signed and spoken languages
